From pre-fire reconnaissance to post-fire analysis: the three phases in which drones help fight wildfires.
Drones are used in 3 phases:
- Pre-fire reconnaissance: Checking ignition points or controlled burns.
- During wildfires: Identifying hot spots, mapping and supporting firefighting.
- Post-fire analysis: Assessing damage and impact and supporting land recovery.
During the 2022 fire season, a fire consumed almost 17,000 hectares in Serra da Estrela. In this case, satellite images were used to monitor the burned areas, a task in which drones could have played a part.
There is another use for drones in this field:
Drones can be used for backburning, using incendiary spheres designed to start controlled fires that help manage wildfire risk.
