Types of Extinguishing Agents

With wildfires ravaging the country, a good extinguishing agent suited to the type of fire can save lives.

But what is an extinguishing agent?

These are substances used to put out a fire. They can be of different types, such as:

Water
Foams
Gels
Retardants

Water

It is the most common agent and works by suppressing the flame.

Foams

A high-expansion aqueous mixture of chemicals that can cover a large surface, restricting the flow of oxygen to the flames. It ends up being more effective than water, reducing evaporation losses and improving adhesion to the fuel.

Gels

Polymers or aqueous solutions that gel and increase their viscosity. They can be produced in concentrated or diluted form and can retain water and release it in a controlled way, which increases their effectiveness.
They provide longer-lasting coverage of fuel surfaces than foams.

Retardants

Made up of salts such as ammonium sulphates and/or natural gums that can slow down the combustion reaction.
They are available as powder or combined with carriers such as water and foams.
