What are they?

Thermal cameras are devices that capture images based on the infrared radiation emitted by objects.

Initially heavy and extremely expensive, they became more popular in the 1990s as their technology improved and costs came down.

Today there are cameras adapted to two firefighting scenarios

Situational awareness: used to help firefighters stay oriented and locate the general direction of a fire.

Decision-making: used for more complex tasks that require high resolution of the temperature gradient, such as rescue operations in low visibility.

Beyond differences in resolution, durability and built-in software, thermal cameras still come at a high cost, from hundreds to thousands of euros per camera even for the simplest models.

The evolution of this technology over the last 30 years shows its potential not only for firefighters but also for civilian use.

So why are we talking about this?

Hephaesnus is currently developing an effective and affordable fire detection technology for the Sallus solution, with a detection range of 6 to 10 m and integration with its extinguishing system.

We keep working on new and better versions of this detection system, including thermal cameras in the future as a promising technology to protect our forests.
